Surface Research

Surface Research
Image 1 of 3

A storyboard on documenting an activity from multiple camera angles—in this case, an activity about a ballet routine. The task entailed selecting a tool and using it to explore a visual and conceptual pattern.

The term surface refers to a 2-dimensional locus of points of a form, an interactive space of a medium that affords thinking and making. Under appointment by the Art Foundation Program at Virginia Commonwealth University, I instructed a course titled Surface Research in the 2013/14 academic year. The instructional objectives set out for students to explore the basic principles and elements of visual composition through studio assignments. The shown example represents an assignment to communicate the visual language of rhythm, which was a distinguished student work created by Megan Goldfarb.
